The mariner’s compass is a truly amazing instrument. It works by lining up magnets inside the instrument with the magnetic North. By holding the compass level a compass card or a North-South arrow will be able to find it’s way. The introduction of the compass many centuries ago allowed ships to enter open ocean and not have to hug the shore to sail by visual location. Sailing at night because also more easy and confident.  The compass opened up our world to exploration and discovery.
