Propeller

Imagine that early plane engines were started up by swinging the wood propeller. No small feat that.... At the signal of the pilot while watching  the gas feed and checking the few instruments available.  Imagine the crazy noise, the nearly invisible rotating propeller, with a fine mist of engine oil descends on mechanic and pilot. Release the brakes.  Ready… go !  Six or seven radially mounted cylinders driving a wood propeller and pulling a wood and canvas plane into the air.
